Human Resources Career Requirements

Human resources professionals ensure that companies throughout the globe can recruit, train, compensate, and advance their most-precious assets: their employees. In the course of a successful human resources career, professionals wear a number of organizational hats. They work with managers to write precise job descriptions used in recruiting new workers. HR staffers participate in recruiting, placing ads, setting up interviews, screening applicants, and advising job candidates about company pay, vacations, health care benefits, investments, and retirement packages.

Educational requirements for work in a human resources department vary by organization. Many colleges and universities offer undergraduate programs in labor relations, human resources, personnel management, or business. Entry-level HR employees are generally expected to hold at least a high school diploma and business training. Community colleges and four-year schools will often arrange human resources internships with businesses.

Specialized Requirements for HR Careers
For professionals making human resources a career, ongoing training at business schools or post-graduate degree and certification programs are an advantage. In addition to hiring personnel, HR staff members are increasingly asked to develop and administer internal employee training programs.

A background in business administration, staff development, organizational structure, and performance appraisal can be a key consideration for advancement into HR leadership and management. Many HR professionals seek an MBA degree to advance to leadership roles in large business organizations.

Other useful courses and certifications in psychology, communications, union relations, labor law, and collective bargaining can also strengthen qualifications for a human resources career. Computer aptitude and training in business software and word processing is essential.
